The most common cause of dry eye disease is Meibomian
gland dysfunction (MGD), which occurs when the tiny
meibomian glands in the eyelids become stopped up. These
glands secrete meibum, a thin layer of oil that covers the
outer surface of the eye, lubricating and keeping eye surfaces
healthy. If the meibum layer is decreased or of poor quality,
irritation and/or blurred vision may result.
